With a little creativity, you can turn farm-fresh blooms into stunning keepsakes, home décor, and handmade gifts. Whether you love the delicate look of pressed flowers, the rustic charm of dried bouquets, or the elegance of floral candles, there’s a flower craft for everyone!
We have a lot of requests on how to preserve the beauty of flowers. In this guide, we’ll share three popular ways to preserve flowers—pressing, drying, and crafting with them—along with fun DIY project ideas to try at home.
1. Pressing Flowers: Capturing Beauty in TimePressing flowers is one of the easiest ways to preserve their delicate details. The process removes moisture while keeping their shape and colour intact, making them perfect for framed art, greeting cards, or even jewelry.
How to Press Flowers
- Choose flowers that are thin and not too thick (pansies, daisies, cosmos, and ferns work well).
- Place flowers between parchment paper inside a heavy book.
- Stack additional books or a weight on top and leave them undisturbed for 2-4 weeks.
- Once dried, use tweezers to carefully remove and display them!
DIY Projects with Pressed Flowers:
Framed Botanical Art: Arrange pressed flowers in a glass frame for elegant wall décor.
Handmade Greeting Cards: Glue pressed flowers onto blank cards for a personal touch.
Pressed Flower Wax Sachets: Apply dried flowers to melted wax in silicone forms for a beautiful, nature-inspired look.
2. Drying Flowers: Timeless & Rustic Elegance
Drying flowers preserves their shape and structure, making them ideal for bouquets, wreaths, and arrangements. Some flowers even retain their colour beautifully, giving you long-lasting décor.
Here are the flowers that we like to dry on the farm:
- Strawflowers
- Lavender
- Roses
- Eucalyptus
- Statice
- Celosia
How to Air-Dry Flowers:
- Gather flowers into small bunches and tie them with twine.
- Hang them upside down in a dry, dark place (like a closet) for 2-4 weeks.
- Once fully dried, gently remove and use in arrangements or crafts. Very popular with our customers, dried Lavender by your bedside is beautiful and helps you relax and sleep better.
DIY Projects with Dried Flowers:
Dried Flower Wreath: Attach dried blooms to a grapevine or metal hoop for a farmhouse-style wreath.
Everlasting Bouquets: Arrange dried flowers in vases for year-round décor.
Floral Gift Wrapping: Use dried sprigs of lavender or baby’s breath to decorate gifts.
3. Crafting with Flowers: Creative DIY Ideas
Once your flowers are pressed or dried, the crafting possibilities are endless!
DIY Flower Craft Ideas:
Floral Resin Jewelry: Embed small pressed flowers in resin to make earrings or pendants.
Homemade Wax Melts: Melt soy wax, add dried flower petals, for a cozy, nature-inspired craft. (Reminder: please do not put dried flowers into candles as they are highly flammable instead try a wax melt)
Botanical Bookmarks: Press flowers onto card stock and laminate for beautiful, handmade bookmarks.
Floral Wall Art: Create a collage of dried flowers on canvas for unique nature-inspired art.
