Candle Care Guide: Burning, Wick Trimming & More

At Fresh Market Farms, we take pride in crafting high-quality, 100% Soy Candles that provide a clean, long-lasting burn. To get the most out of your candles, it’s important to follow proper care techniques. Not only does this extend their lifespan, but it also ensures a safer, more even burn. Here’s everything you need to know about caring for your soy candles.

1. Trim the Wick Before Each Use

One of the easiest ways to maintain your soy candle is to trim the wick to ¼ inch before each burn. A properly trimmed wick helps:
✔ Prevent soot buildup
✔ Reduce flickering and smoking
✔ Ensure an even, steady flame

We recommend using a wick trimmer for a precise cut, especially when the candle burns down deeper into the jar.

2. Use a Candle Snuffer to Extinguish the Flame

Blowing out a candle can create excess smoke and push wax particles into the air, leading to a less pleasant experience. Instead, we suggest using a candle snuffer to gently extinguish the flame. This helps:
✔ Prevent hot wax from splattering
✔ Minimize smoke and soot
✔ Keep your wick properly shaped for the next burn

3. Let the Wax Pool Fully on the First Burn

The first burn is crucial for setting the memory of your candle. Allow your soy candle to burn long enough for the wax to melt across the entire surface before extinguishing it—typically 1–2 hours depending on the size of the candle. This prevents tunnelling, where wax builds up along the sides and reduces the lifespan of your candle.

4. Burn Your Candle in 3–4 Hour Intervals

To maximize the longevity of your candle, avoid burning it for more than 4 hours at a time. Extended burn times can cause the wick to mushroom, leading to excess soot and an uneven burn.

5. Keep Your Candle Away from Drafts

Air currents from fans, open windows, or air vents can cause your candle’s flame to flicker, leading to uneven burning and soot formation. Place your candle in a draft-free area for a consistent burn.

6. Store Your Candle Properly

When not in use, store your soy candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent discolouration and scent degradation. Keep the lid on jar candles to maintain their fragrance.

7. Stop Burning When ½ Inch of Wax Remains

For safety reasons, discontinue use when only ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. Burning a candle too low can cause the container to overheat and potentially crack.
